Registering for the Draft

In 1917 and 1918, about 24 million men of draft age registered. Those U.S. registration records give a peek at the lives of the four Torres brothers at that time. They were a little old to serve in World War I. But this is what draft registration records tell us about them.

  • Apolonio was a 45-year-old white man. He was a carpenter who worked for Ed Dodd in Socorro, N.M. His wife was Aurora Tarin de Torres. He was of medium height and slender build and had brown eyes and black hair. Birth date: 28 September 1873. He completed his registration in Socorro County, N.M., on 12 September 1918.

  • Ignacio, 42, also worked for Ed Dodd in Socorro, N.M. His wife was Andrea Montoya Torres. He was white. He was a tall man of medium build who had black hair and black eyes. Birth date: 25 October 1875. He completed his registration in Socorro County, N.M., on 12 September 1918.
Anybody know who Ed Dodd was?

  • José, 36, worked for AT&SF Co. in Needles, Calif. His wife was Josefa Torres. He was white. He was a tall man of medium build with brown eyes and black hair. Birth date: 10 October 1882. He completed his registration in San Bernardino County, Calif., on 12 September 1918.
His birth year is actually 1881.

  • Rogerio, 29, was single at the time and a self-employed farmer. He was white. He was a tall, stout man who had brown eyes and black hair. Birth date: 8 December 1887. He completed his registration in Socorro, N.M., on 5 June 1917.The draft card notes that he was missing a right leg. Looks like he signed his name Rogerio C. Torres.
What does the C stand for? Maybe Crespin?

Here's a view of Rogerio's draft card.

Here's José Torres. Note he uses his mother's maiden name Trujillo.

Here's Ignacio Torres.

And Apolonio's draft card.
