Say That Again...

Our family isn’t the only family to repeat names. Whether it’s in honor of dead or living family members, many times a family named someone for another family member. Sometimes the name goes on and on through generations. Here are some examples in our family line:

  • Domitila and Moises Sanchez had a child in April 1886 named Maria de los Remedios. The child’s godparents were Candelario Garcia and his wife, Maria de los Remedios Baca. That same couple had been the padrinos of Domitila when she was baptized in January 1870. (This Maria de los Remedios apparently died as a baby).
  • Domitila and Moises Sanchez named a baby (born in December 1889) as Juan Julian after Domitila’s uncle, Juan Julian Trujillo, who was a veteran of the Civil War era. Juan Julian was his godfather, but the baby soon died. Then, a baby born in the next generation to a grandchild of Domitila and Moises was named Juan Julian. He was a World War II veteran.
  • Rogerio Torres married a widow named Clara McCullough. She had a child named Annie from her first marriage who died as a teen-ager -- around the same time Rogerio and Clara had their first child. They named the new baby Annie.
  • Ignacio, Anastacio, Monica and Joe are other repeated names. Many of our living relatives have had these names bestowed upon them in honor of previous relatives.
