Did You Know?

Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles is the final resting place for some California relatives. The Catholic cemetery is a 136-acre site east of Los Angeles that was established in 1896.

No list exists online of burials there, but you can go to the office to get directions to grave sites on the vast grounds. The cemetery, at 4201 Whittier Boulevard, is also the resting place of celebrities from olden days, such as Lou Costello; “Jelly Roll” Morton; and John, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore.
  • Domitila Sanchez was buried at Calvary when she died in Los Angeles in 1952.
  • Her daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Ben Lubbon, also are buried there. They both died in L.A. in the 1960s.
  • José T. Torres, a longtime Fresno resident, died in Los Angeles when he was hospitalized there in 1959. Years later, his wife, Josie, was buried with him at the L.A. site.
